Historiador, crítico y perito en arte estadounidense de origen lituano. Criado en Boston, estudió en la Universidad de Harvard, pero la mayor parte de su vida la pasó en Italia, donde adquirió reputación de autoridad en el tema de la pintura renacentista italiana. Fue consejero del marchante, Joseph Duveen (n. 1869–m. 1939) y de Isabella Stewart Gardner (n. 1840–m. 1924), fundadora del museo Gardner de Boston. Berenson legó su villa, I Tatti (cerca de Florencia), con su colección de arte y su sobresaliente biblioteca a Harvard, para ser administrada como el Centro de estudios renacentistas italianos de Harvard. Entre sus libros se cuentan The Drawings of the Florentine Painters (1903, 1938, 1961) y Los pintores italianos del Renacimiento (1952).
